What she wanted to be when she grew up
“When I thought about work, the only job I could ever imagine was being a veterinarian. I also dreamed of being a fiction writer and poet.”

How she ended up here
Jennifer grew up in a homesteading family taking care of just about every type of animal. She also wrote a lot—especially about animals and their people. She studied biology and English at The University of the South in Sewanee, and earned a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The University of Tennessee. While in veterinary practice, Jennifer earned a master’s degree in English. She has written for many animal health companies through the years, and joined Rumpus Writing in 2020.

Why she loves veterinary medicine
“People who care for animals are the best people in the world. And working with animals is the best job in the world.”

Why she loves writing
“My favorite professor at Sewanee told us that writing ‘hones the skills of the heart.’” That’s why I love it, whether I am conveying a pet’s wonderful life story or a complex medical situation.”
