What she wanted to be when she grew up
“I was never very good at picking just one dream. I’d wake up wanting to be a wildlife veterinarian, but change my ambition to being an elementary school teacher by lunch, and to being an artist or writer the next day. There was even a brief time when I truly thought I’d be the first female President of the United States. I didn’t realize until I was older that most of my aspirations had one thing in common: helping others.”
How she ended up here
Animals have always been a major part of Hunner’s life. After high school, she enrolled at the Vet Tech Institute at Bradford School, graduated in 2019, and became a registered veterinary technician. (Fun fact: Angela was Hunner’s instructor in vet tech school!)
Hunner spent four years in general practice before stepping away to raise her growing family. During her time as a stay-at-home mom, she leaned into another lifelong passion: writing. What began as a creative outlet eventually became a career of its own. Today, she is the author of three self-published novels and two novellas.
In 2026, Angela reached out to Hunner to see if she would be interested in writing for Rumpus. It was a good fit, and she’s a great part of the team!
Why she loves veterinary medicine
“I love being part of the moments that matter: helping a sick pet feel better, watching a puppy or kitten grow up, or giving a senior pet a little more quality time. There is something deeply fulfilling about knowing you’ve made a difficult day easier for someone. When a client remembers my name or tells me that I made a difference, it reminds me exactly why I chose this profession. It truly feels like my calling.”
Why she loves writing
“Writing has been a constant throughout every chapter of my life. I started writing as a child, returned to it as a teenager searching for new worlds, and found it again as a new mother navigating one of the biggest transitions of my life. Whenever my world has felt small, or my emotions have felt overwhelming, writing has helped me make sense of things. It allows me to create, connect, and share experiences in a way nothing else can.”
Who her furry family members are
Keanu “Go-Go” (the spunky little gray and white tabby cat Hunner bottle-fed as a kitten, only for the fetch-playing, stair-tripping, cuddly menace to prefer her kids)
What might surprise you about her
“I’m highly competitive when it comes to video games. Whether it’s Valorant, League of Legends, or another battle royale-style game, I love teaming up with friends and my fiancé. Veterinary medicine and writing may be my careers, but gaming is one of my favorite ways to unwind.”
