As a professional veterinary writing company, we use AI quite a bit. Our team regularly uses large language models to brainstorm ideas, generate outlines, compile lists, and get past the “blank page” hump. There’s no doubt that AI can make the writing process more efficient.
There’s an ongoing debate about whether, and to what extent, AI will replace human writers. If human writers are eventually replaced by AI models, my current source of livelihood would no longer exist, so I’m obviously rooting for the humans to stick around.
I’m convinced that although AI can impressively generate a good blog post or email in an absurdly short amount of time, great writing is a talent reserved for living beings, not electrical devices.
As a fun experiment, I asked AI to generate various forms of content we’ve recently written for clients so I could see who wrote it better. See what you think.
1. Social post
A veterinary client for who we write blogs and social content recently adopted an adorable golden retriever puppy. This spurred a series of social posts about puppy topics, including puppy vaccines. I asked ChatGPT 4.0 to write a social post about puppy vaccines, referencing the AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines. Here’s the AI-generated post, followed by the post our team wrote.

The post listed several more vaccines with their descriptions, which I’ll leave out for brevity. ChatGPT captured the main points, listing which vaccines puppies should receive. However, it’s kind of bland. Also, it doesn’t know our client’s opinions and views about vaccination, which we incorporated to help the post stand out from others on the same topic.

- Don’t skip boosters (these are essential!).
- Revaccinate at 12 months.

2. Job advertisement
A corporate veterinary hospital asked us to write a job ad to help them recruit veterinarians in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. They wanted to play up the Texas theme but didn’t want the ad to be too cutesy. I asked ChatGPT 4.0 to do the same.

3. Promotional email
We recently wrote a batch of promotional assets (emails, social posts, flyers, and on-hold messaging) for a group of veterinary hospitals. I asked ChatGPT 4.0 to write an email to clients of ABC Animal Hospital* to announce an upcoming promotion, and I copied and pasted the details directly from the creative brief provided by the client.

The AI-generated email covers the important details, but it doesn’t address WHY clients should book blood work. The whole point of the promotion is to convince clients to purchase blood work, so we need to let them know how it will help their pet. This is a situation where understanding the veterinary industry is critical to writing relevant content. (Blood work was written as two words in the creative brief, by the way. Adapting to each client’s style is an important part of writing!)

I recently asked ChatGPT 4.0 to create an image of a sign on a veterinary hospital door that said, “Closed. Please enjoy Labor Day with your furry family members.” ChatGPT had a difficult time with the words for some reason, and I ended up with some pretty entertaining results, including these two:
Seeing these examples side-by-side gives me confidence that the phrase I’ve heard over and over—AI won’t replace writers, but writers who use AI will replace writers who don’t—is true. Only time will tell how this quickly changing dynamic will evolve, but I feel safe investing in a new laptop for the years of writing ahead.
